This past Saturday I tried out for the Washington, DC Divas full contact women’s football team! It was a long time coming and I’m so glad I made it out there and tried out for the 2013 team.
Friday night I enjoyed a big bowl of pasta with my honey, foam rolled to make sure my muscles were loose, and laid out my clothes for the next morning.
Theodore had me up around 6:30AM so I had plenty of time to wake up, enjoy my coffee, and make myself a energizing breakfast before heading out at 8:30AM. OH, and I prepped Crockpot chili before I left too (recipe on Wednesday)!
For breakfast I had 2 slices of P28 (Thank you Lauren for telling me about this amazing bread), PB Crave peanut butter (which amazingly low in sugar), and a banana.
I had a lot of butterflies in my tummy when I first arrived at the tryouts but I knew I had to be confident in my abilities, my strength, and my future.
The women who were at the tryout were amazingly supportive, making it an extremely enjoyable morning. Although we all were putting it all out there and trying out, we were encouraging each other through each of the drills and moves.
To start, we ran a lap around the field and then went through a series of warm-up drills.
We then moved straight into a variety of football drills, testing our quickness, strength, speed, and in my opinion, heart! The drills were awesome and I loved going through all of them. Halfway through I said a quick mental thank you to all of the fitness classes I have taken and to Jillian Michael’s for keeping me in shape over the past 6 years since ending my collegiate throwing career.
My favorite part of the whole tryout was going through lineman drills. My body is built for this I thought to myself! I am so a linesman. As I got in my stance, looking down the field, waiting for the coach to say go, I just knew this was where I was suppose to be.
The fact that we were trying out next to FedEx Field, where the Redskins play, made the possibility of making this team so exciting! As I went through each drill I was so proud of myself for all that I’ve done to get my body into shape since 2006.
After the lineman drills the coaches had us run the 40 meter dash. I ran my first one in 6.55 seconds and my second run was 6.75 seconds.
For the last part of the try out we did a tabata workout consisting of burpees and air squats!! Sound familiar? It was a tough workout but thankfully Crossfit and Body Revolution prepped me for them. After our tabata workout we cooled down and closed out the try out.
I am EXTREMELY proud of myself and am really hoping I make the team. There are a few more try outs (which you should attend if you’d like to play full contact women’s football) and then I should find out. This could really change my life, so fingers crossed!

Thats awesome! Seriously that takes a lot of courage and it is super exciting. So proud of you.
Personally it’s one of the things I’m afraid to do. Perhaps it might make it in my bucket list. Right now the closest I have to a contact sport is to try out for roller derby.
