For some reason, this week I’ve been thinking a lot about the past year and how different my life is one year later. Last valentine’s day I was in my last semester of graduate school and was in the thick of wedding planning. One year later I’m married, living in a different state, happy in my career, and mom to an adorable Westie puppy! It has been quite a year but boy am I happy!
Last Valentine’s Day Neal took me on an adventure. It was such a surprise and just what I needed! This year we’re laying low on Valentine’s Day. We actually have a little bit of a staycation up our sleeves for this weekend but for tonight I think we’ll enjoy dinner together, catch up on DVR, and get to bed early.
For the next 40 days, Neal and I have decided to give up sweets/desserts… aka I asked Neal to give up sweets/desserts with me and as a loving husband he said yes… so on Sunday I whipped up a batch of Iowa Girl Eats’ Brownie Truffles as a final treat.
I followed Kristin’s directions exactly, though I’ll admit that my brownies were definitely not fudgy enough.
It made rolling the balls almost impossible so I more or less smooched them into balls.
These brownie truffles were DELICIOUS and a recipe I would definitely recommend. They were easy to make and next time I’ll definitely work to create more fudgy brownies.
Giving up sweets is something I’ve been wanting to do for a while now and I’m trilled to have Neal along side me for this journey. The first couple of weeks will be hard, but I think come March we’ll both be use to not eating sweets/desserts. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m going to miss our frozen yogurt dates, but we’ll just have to find something else to enjoy together.
Are you giving up anything for Lent? Are you doing anything special tonight to celebrate Valentine’s Day?

I like your style. Gotta go out eating something you really want!
I’m re-giving up Diet Coke. I was so good about it for so long but it snuck back into my life somehow. 40 days seems just long enough to kick the habit for good!

Good luck!!!! I have wanted to try that recipe from IGE (one of my favorite bloggers). I have given up pop, I’ve done it before and can do it again!
What a good man to give up sweets with you! I think if I asked my boyfriend to do that, I’d find him in the closet shoving Sour Patch Kids into his mouth.

I’m giving up soda. I’ve done it for Lent a couple times before and the first week is always the worst! I’m hoping it’ll help me drink less soda even after Lent ends too, but we’ll see! Good luck giving up the sweets!

I am not giving up anything for Lent. I use to always try to give something up but then fail or gorge myself for weeks following Easter. My husband and I are going out for a nice dinner tonight to celebrate Valentine’s Day!

I’m not giving up anything for Lent, but for the month of February I have given up refined sugar, caffeine, alcohol, gluten, and dairy. It’s tough! Good luck.

I gave up sweets a few years ago for lent. It was awesome until I decided to celebrate the end of Lent with a slice of cake…the butter and sugar in my tiny slice were such an overload to my system that I ended up…losing my cake, so to speak. So be careful and choose wisely which things you absolutely feel are worth breaking the sweets fast for
This year I decided to just be more conscious. I want to stop cursing and I want to be less stressed. “Giving up” stress isn’t exactly possible, but I hope that I can find away to break free from it for awhile.
YUM….I gave up sweets the month of January…Ive had a few since then but there is not a better feeling in the world I think. I felt so good! Tonight I am having a Valentine’s Day cupcake!!

Good for you! I need a little sweet every now and then. I feel like if I gave them up totally I would have a food accident with a sleeve of girl scout cookies. LOL! I am proud of you!

I feel somewhat silly for never thinking of breaking up cake/ brownies to make pops! I’ve seen the pop pans and mini machines, but never thought of forming them myself… They look like the perfect last dessert!

These look bangin! ONE TIME I gave up sweet for Lent as well, and then try to add something beneficial into my life (like making a commitment to read the Word daily, etc). That backfired like you could not imagine. I ended up gaining 20 lbs!! I gave up sweets to lose more weight, not gain!! It was a total disaster. But that was for me – that won’t be that way for you
. This year my diet is already so limited with the vast array of food aversions that giving up the sweets is out of the question
. You can do it!!
