This has been SUCH a weird week! Weeks like this make me realize how much I like routine when working towards a goal. I feel a little out of wake this week but what can you do?
It all started Monday when I was home sick. Neal had been fighting a bug and graciously gave it to me. It wasn’t the ideal way to start off the week, but thankfully I was feeling better mid afternoon and was able to go back to work Tuesday.
Tuesday was about as routine as it gets but football practice that night was just blah! I couldn’t wait for it to be over.
Then yesterday Neal and I were both home from work due to the snow storm. We got a fair amount of snow where we live but the DC area overall didn’t get as much as projected. We spent the day cleaning the apartment, decorating, and working on a few projects. It was a fun day, but again, far from routine.
Considering it’s already Thursday, I’m fairly nervous about my weigh-in this Friday. I just don’t feel on the ball this week and have been eating WAY too many carbs. Carbs are just so easy to grab. I’ve tried to grab produce but this week made me realize that I don’t have as many on hand as I should. It’s almost always easier for me to grab a simple carb verses something lean and green.
One of the highlights of my day at home yesterday was finishing Jillian Michaels Slim For Life! In this book Jillian Michaels lays out tips for how to lose weight, get in shape, and stay slim for life. Though some of the tips may seem like common sense, Jillian Michaels approach and attitude puts them into a different perspective.
In the book Jillian shares her tips for eating, exercising, grocery shopping, eating out, and traveling. She also talks about common downfalls, time constraints, and how to find motivation.
This book, much like the rest of Jillian’s books and programs, has touched my life. The Body Revolution program is one of the best workout programs I’ve ever done and this book really adds a new level of support to what Jillian provided on the fitness front.
Some of my favorite takeaways included:
- Always order the smallest size possible
- Never eat out of a bag
- Start living out the 80/20 rule
- Do the Body Revolution program again (she doesn’t say this, I’m saying this)
- Don’t hold onto the workout machines when I’m on them
- Switch things up
- Eat less than 2000mg of salt a day
- Eat less than 5g of sugar per serving
Well… my friends at Popchips DC want one of y’all to win a copy of Jillian Michaels newest book… A SIGNED COPY!! Jillian Michaels is a huge fan of popchips and regularly recommends them to her clients as a healthier snacking option.
This Giveaway is now CLOSED! Congratulations to Stephanie on winning!
Stephanie said “This tip is a do as I say not as I do, but packing lunch really helps avoid unnecessary calories. I work at a job where we work 10-12 hours at a computer this time of year and it’s so tempting to get up and go out for lunch instead of eat whatever healthier option I brought from home.”

One tip I try to always remember to keep me on the healthy, happier path, is to make sure I drink lots of water. Now that I replaced soda with water in my daily living, I feel lethargic and bloated when I don’t have enough water!

Love Jillian and would love her book!!
Stay away from processed foods!!!

Eat your veggies!
I have learned to move more, drink more water, and stay away from Girl Scout cookies! Haha

When I’m having a crazy day the one thing I remember is that the only thing absolutely within my control is what I eat.
Drink a lot of water! That has helped cut down on snacking for me.
Lots of water!! Portion control is a HUGE hurdle for me with a meat and potatoes husband – I have to remember that just because he’s getting seconds doesn’t mean I need to!
Tweeted!
Food prep on Sundays! Having healthy snacks, lunches, and breakfasts that I can grab without any thought required is HUGE for me.
My favorite tip is to shop the perimeter of the grocery store. It is where the clean unprocessed goods are. Most of the aisles contain high calorie processed foods.
A tip that has helped me is from Julia Cameron’s powerful book “The Writing Diet.” (I can’t remember but she may have said in the book that this idea is not original to her.) Anyway, the tip is never to let yourself get too “Hungry, Angry, Lonely or Tired” (the acronym to remember is HALT). Avoiding — and, when I can’t totally avoid them, being aware of — these common emotional triggers has helped me live a much more intentionally healthy life

One tip I always give people (and constantly remind myself) is to “Do what you can, with what you have.” It’s so easy to get overwhelmed by our limitations and how far away our goals seem to be. Just do the best you can, RIGHT NOW.

Ahhh!! I’d love this! Jillian and Bob were my inspiration to lose weight, and now I’m sooooo much happier. I think the one tip (more like a quote/mantra) is “I’m not here to impress anyone, I’m here to do this for myself,” I think it puts exercise/health into a great perspective!
I try my hardest to stay away from processed foods & eat as clean as possible. Right now during the week it’s pretty easy, it’s the weekends I need to work on. Would love to check out this book after hearing all the great things you’ve said you learned, and it would be cool to have a signed copy from the one and only Jillian!!
I know it is simple, but it took me a while to master it (& still sometimes fail), but “never shop for groceries when you are hungry” you’ll end up buying things you really don’t need and that aren’t so great for you, the type of tuff that we shouldn’t keep in our kitchens.

I’ve been keeping fruit in my favorite sunny yellow bowl on the counter. The more accesible it is, and the prettier it is, the more likely I am to eat it.

The best tip that I remember was an article from a boot camp coach that I had. It is simple, but he said that he had to remember that he had to get uncomfortable. It makes sense, but it then hit me. I had to stop slowing down when I was uncomfortable. Change happens when you push yourself.

My one tip is to always drink water and stay hydrated. I find that when I’m staying hydrated, I don’t eat as much.
I would say the biggest tip that sticks with me is “when you fail to plan, you plan to fail”. I think that can encompass so much of this healthiness journey from meal plans to packing snacks to scheduling workouts.
Just to stay motivated and keep up the good work! Even a bad day shouldn’t ruin your routine.
One tip that has helped us is pre-planning all of our meals for the week and going grocery shopping immediately after. This helps us plan for the nights the kids have activities, which leaves us less options to eat fast food. So far, it’s working!
Finding a strong support system is my favorite piece of advice. It makes a HUGE difference. I’m a huge Jillian Michaels fan. I feel like I know her from listening to her podcasts!

I loooove Jillian Micheals! Do you listen to her podcast? It’s the perfect thing for me, I listen to it when I do groceries
One of the best tips I’ve gotten has been to add instead of to try to subtract. Instead of saying “I can’t have a chocolate bar today” I try thinking of all the foods I can fill myself with up first–”I can have an apple, as much spinach as I want with my chicken breast, I can have a lime yogurt for dessert” etc.
I love Jillian and her work out videos! She’s awesome! My one tip that I can share is to do what works for you, not what someone else thinks should work. You know your body better than anyone else! What works for one person might not work for you! Thanks for hosting the giveaway! Have a great day!

My biggest suggestion to anyone trying to change their lifestyle is to plan, plan, plan. I plan my entire day (both food and exercise) either the night before or the morning of. If I don’t, I will inevitably make poor food choices.

A tip that helps me lead a healthier and more active life is making sure that I carry nutritious snacks with me at all times. You never know when class or rehearsal (I’m an actor!) will run late, and turning to a vending machine for a snack/meal is a big no no. I also leave myself notes like, “Drink more water” or “Make fitness a priority” to give myself much needed reminders throughout the day!
The best tip I’ve received was when grocery shopping, only buy things on the outsides of the store, not the aisles. The outside contains fresh fruit and veggies, lean meats/tofu, and healthy, hearty breads. Other than canned beans, the only things in the aisles tend to be junk food or pre-packaged sodium fat foods masking as “real food.”

ALSO – I saw Jillian on Chelsea Lately the other night promoting the book and a tip she mentioned was two glasses of wine/drinks per week. That seems hard, but when I lost 135 pounds, I pretty much ONLY drank on Saturdays, and that really worked for me.
My weight has been a constant struggle but I just take one day at a time and shoot to get exercise in 5 times a week. I have recommitted to WeightWatchers and watching exactly what I am eating AND drinking! Trying to only eat more whole foods- not processed.
Would love to win this book. I have lost weight 5 years ago about 50 pounds and I kept it off for a couple of years, but have gained back the last 2yrs about 20lbs and I just want to get back the great feeling of making the right choices and sticking with exercise. It would be great to win the book.
I would love a copy of Jillian’s book! One tip that has helped me is to try to eat REAL food! And if it has more than 5 ingredients, you should probably stay away from it!

Eat a protein packed breakfast. It keeps me satisfied through the entire morning and less likely to overeat later in the day.
To determine if I’m really hungry or just want to eat out of emotional need or habit, I try to ask my self if I would eat some of my least favorite food at that moment. If the answer is no, then I try to drink something like tea or coffee (alas, another vice)until the urge subsides. It doesn’t work all the time, emotional eating urges can be very strong!
Planning is key! I always notice that the weeks I create a plan are the weeks I lose weight.
One tip that I’ve learned is to not grocery shop while you’re hungry!

One thing that has helped me in my last pre-pregnancy weight loss endeavor was to truly understand that this is MY journey – not someone else’s. I need to stop comparing what others are doing with what I’m doing and just do what is right for me. This includes the food choices/eating plan I use, plus the exercises I do.
As for exercise – I used to be one of those all or nothing people: 5 days/week at least 45 min – 1 hour everyday – no compromises!! But that would not last long and just have me burned out in no time. What worked for me most recently prior to pregnancy was committing to the gym 3 days week. You know what, rarely was there ever a time I couldn’t get some activity in at least 3 days a week! And I was able to maintain a consistent active lifestyle for 2 years by doing it that way. 2 years is better to me than nothing at all. 3 days a week of activity is better than none!

My tip is I try to make sure I have ready to eat options of fruits & vegetables in my fridge, so I don’t have an excuse when I am looking for a snack.
I absolutely think that living 80/20 has helped me so much. I don’t beat myself up when I skip a workout or eat badly, because I can embrace the fact that I live a much healthier lifestyle the majority of the time!
the best tip I ever got was to let go, not over think everything and just live in the moment.

I love Jillian! Something that has helped me live a healthier life is the rule that I will not buy or bring dairy into the house. Cheese and other dairy things are such big triggers for me, so I realized if I don’t have them in the house, I won’t eat them. When I do have something with dairy when eating out, it’s such a nice treat.

For me one tip that has continually helped me is to eat! I always feel at my best and lose the most weight when I make sure to eat at least five times a day. If I make sure to eat breakfast and have healthy snacks to help curb my hunger for my main meals, I always feel great.
Always pack a healthy snack. You never know when you might need it (I always have an ounce of almonds in my purse). Better to much on them (4-5pp) than have to run to the drive thru or vending machine!
My tip would be lots of water, it helped me break my soda habit!
i want to win this book so bad!
Wow, this is a book I need to get–would love to have an autographed copy! My tip is to measure portions. 1 C of something may seem like a lot or not much at all depending on the food. Measure until you know what a cup serving is. Then remind yourself from time to time. Portion control has been key for me in watching what I eat.
Drink lots of water. It’s simple but it has really made a difference for me.
