DC Divas vs Pittsburgh Passion

I have spent the past 5 months prepping for this past weekend and it was everything I had hoped it would be! Friday afternoon Neal and I headed to Pittsburgh, PA for my first football game against the Pittsburgh Passion.

After the 3.5 hour drive to Pittsburgh we met up with two of my teammates for dinner at Outback Steakhouse. For dinner I enjoyed a juicy cheeseburger and sweet potato fries. A perfect pre-gameday dinner.

Saturday, game day, started off with 2 cups of coffee and a waffle at the hotel breakfast bar. I was nervous, excited, and anxious all at the same time, eager for the 7PM kickoff to arrive!

Around 2PM we headed over to Olive Garden for our pre-game meal. For lunch I ordered salad, bread sticks, and chicken parmesan (minus the pasta). I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I was to order chicken parmesan. The truth is, it has always been on my no-no list but this weekend I realized that you know what, I can order what I want to order, eat in moderation, and burn a whole lot of calories while playing football. I enjoyed every piece of that chicken and just stayed away from my pasta to balance out the calories.

At 4PM we headed over to Highmark Stadium for our game.  This was the Passion’s first game in the new stadium, and a sellout crowd was there to cheer them on!

After changing, getting taped, and jammin’ out to a few of my favorite tunes, I hit the field with my team for our first game.

I love my team but that love was multiplies times 1000 on game day.  When you compete against another team this overwhelming need to protect your own team comes over you.  I was so proud to stand next to my team mates, supporting them on and off the field.

I was pretty nervous when we hit the field but after the first series, I was ready to go!

We (DC Divas) were down 10 points at halftime (31-21) but boy did we come back in the second half.  The defense was on fire!!  They did not allow one single point in the second half!

With the defense working hard to keep Pittsburgh from scoring, it was time for the offense to get to work.  It was go time!

We won the game 42-31, scoring 21 points in the second half!!

It was so thrilling to win, especially against a team as good as Pittsburgh.  They have some amazing athletes on their team and it was great playing against them.  This won’t be our last time seeing them this year, as we play them at home on June 1, 2013.

After the game Neal and I headed back to our hotel and then headed into the city for dinner at Red Beards.

Post game I had a blue moon, buffalo cheese fries, and a burger! I can’t even tell you how hungry I was after the game.  That was a new kind of hunger for this girl!

Neal and I headed back to DC Sunday morning, enjoying an evening back at home with our puppy before the work week got started.

The week ahead is going to be a busy one, as I leave Friday for our second game of the season in Columbus, Ohio.  It’s thrilling to be in season and I’m ready for the ride!

What was one highlight of your weekend?

Northstar, Marcella’s and Jeni’s are all in the Short North and are absolutely amazing… If you venture down the road, Cap City Diner is one of my favorite restaurants I’ve ever been to, the food and service are really incredible. It’s hard to pick one place, but if you’re on a time crunch, Northstar is what I would pick. Then walk across the street to Jeni’s for ice cream!

Sounds lame-o, but I actually got in a lot of reading this weekend. Usually I only do on week nights, so it felt good to put a dent in my book. Plus it was snowing and too dangerous to go outside :(

Congratulations Ashley!!!! You looked AWESOME in your Redskins-colored uniforms. I thought that was neat how each team coordinated with the local team’s colors (didn’t realize that until now). I hope you had a great first game in my home city, and I’m glad your team won just because you’re on it :)

How awesome! I’ve never heard of the all female football leagues, but that’s so incredible that you’re a part of a team! Congrats on the comeback and win!
