As the subheading of my blog states, this is a Life and Fitness Blog. A blog in which I share my life with you; my goals, my travels, my eats, my adventures AND my fitness.
Since starting this blog back in 2011, weight loss has been a large portion of my life and thus I’ve shared it with y’all a lot. I wish I could say, “I started this blog back in 2011 and since then have reached my goal weight” but the reality is, that hasn’t happened.
Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been thinking a lot about how I want to live and how I want to eat long term. One thing the blogging world has taught me is that there are a lot of different ways to lose weight and that people’s diets vary immensely. I mean, check out this guy’s diet!
Through comments or in e-mails to me, readers have shared a lot of their opinions…
- “You don’t lose weight because you eat too many processed foods”
- “You need to eat more lean protein and less carbohydrates”
- “In order to start a blog where you are trying to advise others you should be relatively accomplished at what you are advising people on”
- “1) STOP EATING SO MUCH. 2) Work out when you say you’re going to. 3) Repeat for like six months”
- “You fail because you never give any of your programs a chance to succeed. You can’t find the right diet, because you stick to none of them and talk all the time about how you cheat. You gain weight, because you eat too much and too often”
- “no wonder you’re not losing any weight, you can’t eat a big bowl of mac & cheese with a tonnage of cheese and expect to see results”
You see, some may look at my blog and see excuses, challenges that failed, goals that weren’t met, and diets that ended before they began… but what I also hope you see is a woman who has lived life and has fought to figure this all out.
I was quite successful with my weight loss prior to starting Coffee Cake and Cardio and guess what, I ate mac and cheese, drank beer, and enjoyed my fair share of Mexican food when I lost those 50 pounds. I was truly at a different place in life when that happened and unfortunately I was not blogging back then.
Coffee Cake and Cardio started in the midst of dating Neal, getting engaged and married, starting a new job, attending graduate school, and a LOT of personal stuff that I’ve never shared about on this blog. I may not have been successful in my weight loss these past two years but I’ve found peace again, which believe it or not, means more to me than the number on the scale.
You see, weight loss, life long weight loss, is a process. A process that involves acknowledging the things you need to change, deciding upon the changes you want to make, finding out what works for you, your body, and your lifestyle, implementing those changes, making mistakes, and succeeding. From the outside looking in, I haven’t been successful, but I can confidently say that day in and day out I am working to better myself and to enjoy this life I have been blessed with.
What I’ve learned over the past two years is that I’m happiest when I’m working out, moderating how much I eat, and not restricting what I eat. I’ve learned and decided over the years that I don’t want to live a life in which I can’t enjoy a dinner out with my husband, sip one too many margaritas with my girlfriends, make fun desserts for my kids, and try all the freaking awesome Pinterest recipes that exist out there. A life without these things is just not a life I want to live.
You better believe that in one month I am going to be digging into my wedding cake topper with Neal on our 1 year anniversary. That this fall, I’m going to make some pretty unhealthy party appetizers because you know what, they’re awesome, I love football season, and it makes my hubby happy. And guess what, next December when Neal and I are on vacation, I’m not going to worry about my weight AT ALL.
In the end, I had to ask myself, “how do I want to live and how do I want to eat for the rest of my life?”. For me, eating clean day in and day out is just not how I see myself living, but eating lots of clean meals, enjoying an “unclean” meal from time to time, and cherishing every celebratory meal is just the kind of life I want to live.
My goal is still the same, to reach a happy and healthy weight before having kids! I am working hard to reach that goal and am loving every moment, and bite, of life in between.
