My Weight Loss Journey
Welcome to Coffee Cake and Cardio!! My name is Ashley and I am health and fitness blogger here in the Washington, DC area. For as long as I can remember, I have struggled with my body weight and self image.
I first weighed over 200 pounds at the age of 13. As a teenager I remember shopping at Lane Bryant as it was the only store that had plus size clothes that fit me. There was nothing more mortifying than having to wear knit pants and sweaters that scream ‘Mom’s closet’ as a 6th grader. Growing up overweight was extremely difficult for me! Being teased, left behind, and isolated… I still cringe when I think about grade school.
My weight continued to climb despite efforts by my parents to help me to lose weight. I saw numerous dietitians and joined Weight Watchers with my Mom many times throughout my teens.
Despite my weight loss struggles, in the 9th grade I began lifting weights with the football team during PE class. Lifting weights daily led to my career as a powerlifter. In 2002, my senior year of high school, I won the state championship in powerlifting, which was awesome!! I benched 195lbs, squatted 400lbs, and dead-lifted 400lbs. Just shy of 1000lbs total. On top of powerlifting, I threw the discus in high school which carried me into college as a discus and hammer thrower.
I loved throwing the discus and the hammer as a collegiate student-athlete but I did not see the need to lose weight during college as I felt my sport justified my size. It wasn’t until my collegiate career ended that I realized how unhealthy I was and how much I needed to lose weight.
In 2006, I moved to Vermont just after college to begin my job at Dartmouth College. At that time I weighed 261 pounds! I hated the way I felt and although I was still clinging to the fact that I was a college athlete, the reality was, it was time for me to change my life!
I joined Weight Watchers in the Fall of 2006 and I began the program counting my points and finding ways to eat lots of foods with the lowest points value. In all reality, I was eating a lot of processed foods. A few weeks later I decided to switch to the “CORE” program in which you were allowed to eat as much fruit, veggies, lean meat, and fat free dairy in moderation each day. You were also able to eat one serving of brown rice, potatoes, or whole grain pasta a day. You really had to listen to your body and decide when you were hungry and when your body was satisfied.
I reached my lowest weight in the October of 2007, weighing in at 207 (losing 54 pounds total).

From October 2007 to April 2009 I fluctuated between 207 and 215 pounds. I went through a lot of personal things back in the spring/summer of 2009 and that is when I began gaining weight back. Since the summer of 2009 I have fluctuated between 215 and 230 pounds, losing and gaining the same 15 pounds.
As a newlywed, 2012 marked the start of a new chapter in my life. I have had to close the book on my past weight loss and look at my present as a new start. This blog is a window into my life and will show you my daily journey to reach my goal weight.

Beautiful story, and really imrpessive pictures. Totally inspirational!
I just happened to come across your blog and I can relate to your story in so many ways.
Yay! Well welcome to Coffee, Cake and Cardio. I’m so glad you found it!
I can so relate to you Ashley! Lane Bryant shopping for your Homecoming dress leaves something to be desired…but changing my life through good food and exercise changed me too. It has NOT been easy, but it’s totally worth it. xo!
This is awesome! I too struggled with my weight as a child and can relate to shopping at Lane Bryant as a middle schooler. It’s horrible that my, and so many others, have childhood memories riddled with bullying. You should be so very proud of yourself!

YAY!! I love connecting to other DC bloggers! Welcome to Coffee Cake and Cardio
Hi Ashley,
I’m not sure you remember me, but we had a class or two together @ Mason. I stumbled upon your blog completely by accident when I saw a face I thought looked familiar on another blog – it was you!
I love that you have the courage to share your story. As someone who has always had issues with food and their body image it hits straight home. I can’t say that our battles have been exactly alike, but there are definite similarities. I never really knew you well enough to know your struggles and I’m sorry to learn what you have gone through, but you seem to be doing really well now and have met your prince charming, how exciting!
Anyways,I just wanted to say hello & congratulations!
Liz
Hey Liz!! Of course I remember you. Can you believe we graduated 6 years ago? Crazy.
Thank you for your kind words and for ready my story. It’s really fun reconnecting!

Hi Ashley,
It was very inspirational to read your story. Thank you for touching on all the points of the journey. I own two health clubs and so often people do not hear the entire story and feel that they are so different than others going through a hard time. Congrats!!

Hi! Love your story. I’m a fellow FFA and found your blog via the Reebok Fit Blog story on Carrots n Cake. Can’t wait to read more! All the best.
Hi! You have an amazing story!! Congrats to you on your weight loss! I once weighed just over 200 lbs & struggled to find a way to lose the weight. I eventually came across counting calories (similar to weight watchers) & that’s what’s worked for me… helped me lose just over 50 lbs back in 2008. I had a cross-country move this year, which caused me to stress-eat, so I’ve put on a few extra lbs & am trying to get them off. I’m finding that very low carbs (ketogenic diet) is what’s working for me, but everyone is different. Best of luck to you & love the blog!!
This is a really amazing story!! I’ve struggled with my weight since I was a teenager as well, and your blog is very inspiring!
Wonderful story! So happy to hear about your success! I have found what makes dieting, exercising, & staying motivated easy is the right mindset. Having a weight loss mindset is 90% of the game to achieve lasting success with your weight. Diet & exercise is only 10% of the solution. Thank you for sharing this!

it’s so awesome you live in DC and are also a former powerlifter
just the past weekend in the gym i tried to bench press again and could barely do the bar! it sparked me to pick it back up again to help with weight loss.
Wow, I love your honesty, Ashley! I just stumbled across your blog, and there you are, telling us all about your life; your struggles, your happy moments. I’m amazed of how much we actually have in common. I really enjoyed reading your blog and will continue doing so.
I noticed a picture of you after what looks like a marathon. Did you complete the marathon? I have signed up for a marathon in Venice, Italy in October 2013. I am worried about whether I should lose weight for the marathon to avoid injuries. I don’t know if you wrote about your marathon experience in your blog. I would certainly love some tips.
Love,
TheNorwegianChick
I ran a half marathon in 2010.
In my opinion, if you have a proper training schedule, your body will have time to adjust and to get in shape. Your body will change and adapt, which may mean weight loss or it might mean maintenance. I truly believe that anyone can run a half marathon or marathon if they train properly.
Best of luck!!! I haven’t blogged about my half marathon experience but I can definitely do that.
